The Writers’ Building, or just the Writers’, is the official secretariat building of the state government of West Bengal in Kolkata. The 150-meter long building stretches across the northern flank of the Lal Dighi (tank) at the centre of Dalhousie square or Benoy Badal Dinesh Bagh as it is known now. The main structure was completed by 1777 under the supervision of Governor General Warren Hastings. Designed and built by Thomas Lyon. Originally the building was a training centre for the East India Company writers (junior clerks) and thus the name Writers’ Building’. For more than 200 years the building served as the seat of the British Government in India.
