The Hooghly Pontoon Bridge, Year 1931, (Code 161) Image

The Hooghly Pontoon Bridge, Year 1931, (Code 161)

- Archival Photo Print

3,000.00 – 30,000.00

A pontoon bridge once spanned the Hooghly River, connecting Calcutta and Howrah, but was replaced by the Howrah Bridge, which was commissioned in 1943 and renamed Rabindra Setu in 1965. The pontoon bridge was located at the same site as the current Howrah Bridge. The bridge was built around the 1870s and was illuminated by electric lamps in 1879. This old floating bridge faced challenges, including damage from a cyclone in 1874, which led to its replacement with the current, more permanent steel cantilever bridge. Over time, the growing load on the bridge led to plans for a new structure. The pontoon bridge is now a historical predecessor to the iconic Howrah Bridge.
