- Archival Photo Print
The ‘Shaheed Minar’ -- ‘martyrs’ monument’ -- in memory of the martyrs of the Indian freedom movement is the erstwhile Ochterlony Monument located at the north-east part of the Maidan in Kolkata. Designed by J. P. Parker and paid for from public funds it was erected in 1828 in memory of Major-general Sir David Ochterlony, of EIC.
The monument has a 157 ft high minar shaped tower with an Egyptian style foundation, classical fluted column, a Syrian upper portion, and a Turkish dome with two balconies at the top. The monument was rechristened ‘Shaheed Minar’ in 1969. As part of the beautification of the city the monument is illuminated in the evening.

Kolkata: Cultural Confluence of India
Kolkata, or Calcutta, once the capital city of the British Empire, and now the capital of West Bengal, is today a flourishing metropolis. It has a feminine mystique, for the city exudes a power that is symbolized by the ten-handed goddess with the Durga Puja festival being one of the highlights of a Kolkata visit, with the newly acquired Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) tag, from UNESCO.
Kolkata is a pulsating city of the argumentative, educated, culture-soaked Bengali. It also has a diverse populace, embracing into its fold an A to Z of nationalities from Anglo Indians to Zoroastrians. It was sought out by the conquistadores in the 16th to 17th centuries, dominated by the British, and colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch, Danes, French, in settlements along the Hooghly banks. And it continues to be a melting pot of cultures.
It is a city of contrasts. With 15 million people and 3500 slums, and yet with huge swathes and square miles of greenery from the Maidan to the Botanical Gardens from the numerous lakes to the Eco Park with 480 acres of verdure.
Kolkata as a city is old, and yet there is a whole new township at Rajarhat New Town, with ample space for leisure and a bustling commercial, IT and ITeS and educational hub. Kolkata has a thriving film industry in Tollywood, its educational institutions are amongst the finest in the country, it has some of the best sporting stadiums, the oldest and sought after clubs, and some of the most iconic monuments and structures from the Victoria Memorial to the Howrah Bridge, the many churches, temples, synagogues, mosques, a Metro rail network ever expanding, yet with trams and rickshaws still accessed.
Kolkata is hospitable to the hilt, giving you heritage and hauteur, couture and cuisine, entertainment and empathy, a sport and pastime city as much as it is a hotspot of theatre, music, dance, art. A city that will give you palaces, poetry and promises aplenty to keep.
