Princep Ghat standing majestically on the river banks of Hoogly overlooking the second Hoogly Bridge is a heritage site of Kolkata since 1841 when it was built. The monument in memory of the Anglo Indian scholar James Princep is rich in Greek and Gothic inlays. The Palladian Porch was designed by W. Fitzgerald. The monument is located between Water Gate and St.George’s Gate of Fort William. The Princep Ghat today is a scenic architectural statement on the riverfront and is one of the oldest recreational spots of the city. The monument witnessed the visit of the Prince of Wales (later King George V) in 1905 and other members of the British Royal Family in 1911.
