- Archival Photo Print
Lieutenant-General Sir James Outram, (29 January 1803 – 11 March 1863) was a British general who fought valiantly in the 1857 Sepoy mutiny. He succeeded Henry Lawrence as the Chief Commissioner of Oudh and at the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny and commanded two divisions of the Bengal Army. He gained a reputation for fearless bravery during the siege of Lucknow and was instrumental in the recapture of Cawnpore (present day Kanpur) and Lucknow. He retired to England in 1860 and is buried in the Westminster Abbey. Created in 1861 his statue in the Victoria Memorial garden shows the General and his horse in full gallop and is considered one of the best works of sculptor John Henry Foley and one of the finest equestrian statues in India. Foley also sculpted statues of Lords Hardinge and Lord Canning, erected at other sites in Calcutta. This photograph was taken by William George Stretton in the 1870s and is part of the Dunlop smith Collection: Sir Charles Aitchison Album of Views in India and Burma. Sir James Outram was nicknamed The Bayard of India, which constitutes a reference to a French soldier Pierre Terrail, Seigneur de Bayard, who lived in the fifteenth and sixteen centuries and was known for his valorous feats against insurmountable odds. He was called le chevalier sans peur et sans reproche, the ‘knight without fear and without reproach’.
