- Archival Photo Print

The Old Mission Church was founded by the Swedish Lutheran missionary Johann Zachariah Kiernander in 1770 and is the oldest Protestant Church in Calcutta. In 1767 Kiernander purchased land and decided to build a church at his own expense. Completed in 1770, he called it the Beth Tephillah--Hebrew for House of Prayer, but the church was popularly known as the Mission Church or the Lal Girja, the Red Church, because of its brick red finish. After the construction of the  St. John’s Church, the Mission Church came to be known as the Old Church and St John’s was the New Church. The famous poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt was baptised here.
