The Calcutta High Court stands majestically near Fairlie Place, resplendent in red brick and sandstone, close to Government House. It is the oldest high court in India. At one time the address—3 Esplanade Row (West) used to be the location of the Supreme Court of Bengal Walter Granville, a successful and celebrated architect in the Victorian era, designed the High Court, just as he was also responsible for the architectural excellence of the General Post Office. Although the court was established as the High Court of Judicature at Fort William on in 1862, the neo-gothic style building was constructed in 1872. The design is said to be based on the famous Cloth Hall of Ypres, Belgium.
