Great Eastern Hotel, Year 1841, (Code 062)

- Archival Photo Print

3,000.00 – 30,000.00

Referred to as “the Jewel of the East”, The Great Eastern Hotel was established around 1841 in Calcutta, by David Wilson as the Auckland Hotel, when Kolkata was perhaps the most significant city not just in India but in the whole of the Asia Pacific region. It was the first hotel in India to be illuminated by electricity. It has a history of hosting many dignitaries over the years including Mahatma Gandhi, Nikita Khrushchev, Elizabeth II, Mark Twain, and Ho Chi Minh. After the Lalit Hotels, Palaces and Resorts in took over the hotel in 2005, it was meticulously restored as a heritage property. The architecture of the hotel now is a combination of Victorian, Edwardian and contemporary styles.
