The Lt Governor’s Palace and currently the Raj Bhavan, is the official residence of the Governor of West Bengal. Built in 1803 it is a magnificent palatial edifice in the heart of the city designed by Capt. Charles Wyatt in a neoclassical style with distinct Baroque overtones on the lines of Lord Curzon’s family mansion at Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire. The suite in the north-west wing of the first floor is where the President, Vice-President and the Prime Minister of India and heads of state of other nations reside when visiting. The Throne Room contains the throne of Wellesley, and of Tipu Sultan. The Council Chamber is used by the Governor to hold large meetings. The Marble Hall on the ground floor is used for state and private meetings.
