24 km from Calcutta city on the famous Grand Trunk Road, was founded in 1775 as a cantonment. The classical mansion stands along the banks of the Hooghly surrounded by landscaped gardens spanning over 350 acres. In the early 19th Century, Marquess Wellesley finding the riverside location congenial decided to build the summer residence and getaway of the Governor-General of Bengal in the precinct amidst an English style park. Government House, continued as the summer residence of Governor Generals and Viceroys till 1911 when the capital of British India moved to New Delhi. Government House was a palatial residence for the Governors-General of Calcutta, commissioned by Marquess Wellesley. The architect, Captain Charles Wyatt (1759-1818), an officer in the Bengal Engineers, based the building design on Robert Adam’s design of the Derbyshire’s Kedleston Hall. There were four ceremonial gateways, two of which crossed Esplanade Row. Renamed Raj Bhavan, the building is now the residence of the Governor of West Bengal. Since 2013 it has been declared a heritage site.
