A Hall at Seven Tanks In Calcutta, Year 1870, (Code 001)
Currency Department, Year 1833, (Code 031)
- Archival Photo Print
Located in the heart of Dalhousie square The Old Currency Building was built in 1833 and originally housed the Calcutta branch of the Agra Bank. In 1868, it was taken over by the Office of the Issue and Exchange of Government Currency, under the Controller of the Currency. From 1935 until 1937, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) used the building as its first central office. It is a three-storied Italianate structure with grand wooden staircases leading up to the upper floors. During the renovation project, ASI archaeologists uncovered evidence of an underground canal from the nearby Hooghly River, the water from which was used to cool newly-minted coins.
