Chowringhee Road is one of the major arterial roads connecting the eastern fringes of the business district of Esplanade southwards up to the Lower Circular Road (AJC Bose Road), crossing. Prior to the 17th century the Maidan and Esplanade area was mainly a tiger infested jungle intercepted with swamps and rice fields. Its eastern fringe was marked by an old road, supposedly built by the Sabarna Roy Choudhury a north-south connect between the villages of Halisahar and Barisha. The area included three small villages one of them being Chowringhee. In 1964 the name Chowringhee Road was changed to ‘Jawaharlal Nehru Road’
