A Hall at Seven Tanks In Calcutta, Year 1870, (Code 001)
Chitpore Road, Burra Bazar, (Code 023)
- Archival Photo Print
Burrabazar, one of the largest wholesale markets in India, is always abuzz with activity. More than 30,000 traders and hawkers work from here. Retail trade also flourishes with knowledgeable domestic buyers accessing their daily items of clothing, and food, medicines and textiles to jewellery and wedding wear. They find it a huge value for money and bravely breach its teeming streets. In the 18th century, it was a bustling business hub, mainly for textiles and yarn known as Sutanuti Haat, which was to later become Bazaar Calcutta, finally evolving into Burrabazar. The area was home to prosperous merchants like the Mullicks, Setts, Basaks, Kundus and Tagores. It still continues to be the nerve centre of the business community. Following the Battle of Plassey, there was a sharp rise in trade and commerce and business in textiles boomed with the river being nearby. To get an idea of its reach, it extends from Howrah Bridge in the north to Dalhousie in the south, Strand Road in the west to Chitpore in the east. Various estimates of the volume of trade float around, the 100 crore daily turnover figure being the most touted. The most unique part of it is the Katras or Pattis, each specializing in specific items. Khangrapatti, for instance, sells knitting needles and electronic goods, artificial ornaments and embellishments. Kapra Patti and Sutta Patti are self explanatory—their wholesale and retail garment and clothing range being a standout.
